Jussi Silvennoinen, professional mapdrawer visit Halden SK elitegroup

Jussi-n1Jussi Silvennoinen from Finland (Kalevan Rasti) has for some weeks been with us and drawn on the new southern part of Iddefjordfjella. Jussi is one of the world's best cartographers with inter alia the World Cup and Jukola maps on his CV. On photo: Some of the runners listening to Jussi

We were very pleased that he agreed to hold a small talk for us - about how he does when he draws maps.

Here follows some comments during his speech:

The art of drawing maps? Same as taking pictures, the art of taking nice pictures requires a good technique.

A map can look very good, but do not necessarily work for that reason.

"Some mapmakers can develop good orientation maps, others may not."

"A map can be almost perfect, but could not work out well. Important that the map is well readable "

Fixtures:

• proper shoes are important, one must go much in the woods

• Compass

• Maps Folder

Uses non "skrittelling" - "had not anything cm targets at Compass"

Draws in 1: 5000

How to work in the field:

• Must see all the terrain.

• Attempting to draw the map after first impression. Trying not to take on too much.

• Must draw completely finished in the terrain.

• Approximately 35 hours per quarter miles.

"Uses no GPS when stock map, is probably a bit conservative"

Mapping has not changed much, while trail laying has changed more in the last few years.

It is easiest to draw the bottom upwards.

Have no fixed limit on stone height, adjusts the extent so that it is legible ..

Trying to customize map drawing in relation to the vegetation may change according to the seasons.

Trying to draw the maps so they are most appropriate when there possibly is a big competition.

Want to draw in 1:15 000 when I think that they give the best results.

Jussi has drawed maps in France, Italy, Iceland, a map in Sweden and now for the first time in Norway. Maybe not the last.

Thanks to Jussi for an interesting speech and we look forward to use his map.
