Training camp in Portugal

Portugal Februar 2015

We left cold weather and darkness for some days and we landed in Portugal. First days were passing among beautiful and technical trainings in the rocky area of Viseu.

After four demanding days of 2-3 trainings/day, we headed out to the coast where Portugal O'Meeting was waiting for us. Results were not the main goal considering all of us were a bit tired from the previous days, but if they come, they are welcomed. Most of our runners did not run all the races in full speed.

On Friday, some of us decided to continue training in the forest, but others preferred to take part in the first competition, Sprint Mix Relay. It was a fast race mixed with urban-parks and some forest where the route choices were crucial to not lose these few seconds which would be decisive at the end. After a thought fight, one of the Halden teams (Kine-Antonio-Espen-Mari) took the victory ahead of some strong clubs and nationals teams like Russia (2th place) ,Scotland (3th place), Switzerland, Austria, Järla, Ravinen, etc.

The first two stages of POM were going to be held during the weekend with a long and middle distance respectively in a really fast terrain predominated by white forest with some small hills and a grid line of paths. The winning time was around 4:30min/km in the men, 5:30/km in women elit class. In general, the best navigation was stay close to the red line and try to push as much as you can in the tough soft sand.

The 3rd day was going to be the most important for the elite class; it was a long distance WRE race where everyone was going to scrape some points and increase his personal world ranking. It was going to be in a new map, same kind of style like previous days but with more green areas which gave more tricky and funny courses.

Girls got the best results for Halden ski club, being Ida (6th) and Eva(7th) the fastest, and Kine (17th), Mari(28th) and Hanna (40th) not so far behind. In the men class, Magne (11th) leaded the boys followed by Antonio (19th) and Espen (53th). One of the favourites, Olav, had to stop because of a pain in the calf and he couldn't finish. On the other hand, Helen was a bit sick during the competition and she ran only part of the courses.

Last day it was the 3rd long distance (in 4 days) of this event, but this time, the excitement would be of feeling the breath of people behind and try to catch the one who is in front, exactly, it was a chasing start to fight for the overall. After a tough fight in the trickiest course of the all the championship, best results were for Eva (6th), Mari (14th) and Antonio (14th) in elit class and Anders(15th) in Men-20.

It was a productive training camp where we tuned up our orienteering skills through quality trainings and a well organized competition where we tested our shaped among top runners and we got (even) more ready for this season.
