We continue to interview our new runners. Today Sabine Hauswirth and Rolf Wermelinger, Swiss couple who moved into the new Halden SK house at Alfheimveien 30 a few weeks ago, are answering my questions.
How did you get in touch with Halden SK and why did you choose this club?
Sabine: I looked for a place in Scandinavia, where I could stay for a longer time and prepare for the World Champs 2016 in Sweden. Then I heard that Halden has really good trainings possibilities and not much snow in wintertime.
Where do you come from? What did you do (studies, job) before coming to Halden and what do you do here now, besides training?
Sabine: I am studying geography, but at the moment my focus in on the orienteering sport. I am also working part time for OCAD Inc. as Marketing assistance.
Rolf: I quit my job (salesman in a sports shop, bicycles and skis) by the end of November 2014 to travel in Australia and also to be able to join Sabine to Halden. I will look for a new job in autumn and I might do another education.
Tell me a bit about your orienteering background, your best results and/or also about your most exciting orienteering experience.
Sabine: I do orienteering since I am 14 years old. My first JWOC was in Lithuania 2006 and the last in 2007 in Australia where I won bronze in the relay and become 4th in the long distance. 2009 was my first WOC with the elite, but after that I decided to focus more on my studies and left the National Team for one year. In 2012 I came back to the team and had to cope with some injuries. When I won European- and World Champion Gold in the relays last year, a dream became true and of course the good results motivate me to continue and improve my orienteering.
Rolf: I did orienteering seriously until I was 20 years old (I was in the regional squad). Then I started with mountain biking and later on I competed in MTBO for 3 years in the Swiss team. Now I like orienteering as a hobby and still do a lot of mountain biking and some mountain bike marathon races.
What is your most favourite club training and how does the club environment differs from what you experienced earlier?
Sabine & Rolf: We like the idea of the Höiås training! Doing the training together and then visit the sauna and have dinner together.
What do you expect from the club and how long do you plan to stay? Do you have any dreams/goals?
Sabine: I will stay until Jukola 2015 and come back to live in Halden next spring. I have not planed further than WOC 2016, but I'd like to stay at Halden SK and run many more Tiomilas Jukolas, 25-mannas etc.
Rolf: I will stay until the 10th of June and enjoy the club trainings and the good atmosphere. My focus is on mountain biking because I will compete in some races when I am back in Switzerland. But I do also enjoy the orienteering trainings and try to improve my technique.
Do you have any favourite leg at Tiomila, favourite orienteering discipline, terrain?
Sabine: For me there is no favourite leg at Tiomila. The thing what counts is the good atmosphere and being at Tiomila together as team and club.
Any (other) hobbies?
Sabine: climbing (mountaineering), cycling.
Rolf: cycling, rock-climbing and traveling
Do you think and if so in which way can you enrich the club environment?
Sabine: I hope that I can share my international experiences and maybe give some new imputes.
